The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Nasdaq Composite Index were doing a fine job of hitting lows on their own before the Consumer Price Index decided to jump in this morning. Then the indices really hit the skids. The Dow was diving 300 to 10,623. The Comp has plunged 224 to 3453. The Labor Department said the overall CPI rose 0.7%, above the 0.5% expected reading by economists in a Reuters poll. The rise in the overall CPI was pushed mainly by increases in energy and transportation costs.
